Respite gives an unpaid family caregiver a defined break. It may happen at home or through a community program, depending on needs, eligibility and local availability.
A short handover makes the break easier
Agree the exact start and finish time, and who will be present.
List the routines, meals and familiar activities to continue.
Explain communication preferences and what the person likes to do themselves.
Obtain clinical instructions from the treating team where needed.
Confirm the agency contact and backup if the scheduled worker cannot attend.
Define the handoff
List the person's routines, communication preferences, mobility assistance, meals, important contacts and the actions a substitute caregiver may or may not perform. Include the exact start and end time. If health-related instructions are involved, obtain them from the treating professional rather than asking a nonmedical worker to make a clinical decision.
Start small enough to learn
A family may choose an introductory visit or a shorter planned block before relying on a longer absence. Ask who supervises the worker, how changes are documented and what happens if the scheduled person cannot arrive. The right format depends on the family; this site does not recommend a provider or certify fit.
Look beyond one service label
City, County, IHSS and community programs may have different service boundaries and eligibility rules. Private-pay home care is another path. Compare the official starting points and ask each program directly about current access, cost and waiting periods.
