Start with the type of help

Understand home care before you talk with our team

Home care is not one single service. Use this guide to separate everyday caregiver help, licensed health services, public-program support, daytime programs and residential settings.

Medical home health

Ask: What has the clinician ordered, and what does the insurer cover?

IHSS

A California program with county eligibility and assessment.

Ask: How do we apply, and what does the county need from us?

Adult day support

Scheduled support outside the home.

Ask: Which activities, transport and service hours are available?

Residential care

Support in another living setting.

Ask: What care is included, what costs extra, and which license applies?

Five paths that families often compare

Nonmedical home care can help with daily routines, meals, errands, companionship and family respite. Home health refers to qualifying skilled services such as nursing or therapy under a clinical plan. IHSS is a California public program with its own application and county assessment. Adult day support happens outside the home during scheduled hours. Residential care changes where the person lives. These paths can overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

Choose questions, not labels

Write down what happens during a normal day, when family is available and which tasks may require a clinician. Ask each organization what it actually provides, who supervises workers, what happens after a missed visit and how the written plan changes. Avoid assuming that a familiar phrase such as live-in, companion or home health has the same meaning everywhere.

Use the next planning step

Start with the everyday tasks you want covered, then build a week and try a cost example—all in one open page. You can stop with a partial plan, edit any earlier choice and print the current result. The cost range is a dated planning aid, not a provider quote.

Your next practical step

Choose the everyday tasks you want covered

Use just the parts that help. No account, sign-up or care request is needed.
